Often times people are not only confused by the tools that a locksmith uses, or even the phrasing of how to perform a job, they are dumbfounded with terms as simple as the type of lock they have and even the company who makes the lock or hardware.

While most of these names and terms mean very little to people in their daily lives it is a good idea, should these services be required, to learn a few of them around your house and business and to be aware of the name, make and model of your vehicle.

Generic terms usually are the best and most informed words that the average person has readily available to them and who can blame them? If it is not specific to their field of work or interests the best way to describe something is in the easiest and most general of terms. However with so many variations of products, tools and scenarios presented to a locksmith these generic terms have little by way of description value for the locksmith.

When describing an auto lock out the usual response to what kind of locking system do you have is, "locks on my door". There are many types of keys and locks with similar features so a locksmith has to discover what the real words are.

Padlocks, cabinet locks, door locks, frames, strikes and so on, these all have specifics that must be ascertained in order to perform the just correctly and the locksmith will try and identify a lock in order to have the right part for install and service.

Names used for locks and hardware doesn't merely mean just the part but also the manufacturer, part and key type, function, method of installation and construction of the part.

When a locksmith is looking for information on a specific part or lock they will use combinations of words that attribute features to the lock they are investigating. There can be a number of words used all depending on the amount of information they need to convey.

When determining a lock for a job or order the locksmith must find out the name, the manufacturer, the appearance of the lock or any other feature that helps the locksmith with this search. Sometimes a name that identifies a lock can be enough for some locksmiths to service it.

Generic terms (and some have dual meaning) that a locksmith hears frequently are padlock, which can be a combination lock, luggage lock, deadbolt, bike lock, car lock, door lock, key in knob and lever lock, trailer lock, guest house lock and so on.

While it is not necessary to know the names and parts of all the locks and security hardware in your home, office or automobile, understanding their basic functions and describing their appearance accurately can help a locksmith in determining what you,the customer requires.

The Feel Method of Lock Picking

How many times, just because it is there, have you wandered by a safe in a friend or relative's home or workplace and spun the lock just because it's there? Maybe you thought you could figure out with a paper clip and some super spy tactics how to "feel" the parts of a lock and open it up like a magician or illusionist?

A lot of the time people tend to think they can perform tricks with locks just by guessing, intuition or feel. While there certainly are cases of those lucky few, who can, without any training, happen upon a lock and open it with ease, these feats are rarely repeated.

In the industry of locksmithing there is one method that might sound easy, but it still takes many years of practice and experience with knowledge of the locks being worked on to successfully and consistently open them, appropriately titled the feel method.

The feel method requires the use of lock picks and while it is not always the preferred method, it can be very helpful in some situations.

What the locksmith does is insert a lock pick, usually a hook or diamond pick, holding it like you would a pen or pencil. Pointing the tip upward and towards the pin the pick is then inserted into the keyway.

A torque wrench is used in the top or bottom portion of the keyway, depending on where there is more working room and using the index finger of the hand holding the torque wrench pressure is applied lightly in the direction that the locksmith wants the plug to turn.

As the pressure is released from the torque wrench the pin stack will drop back into place. By repeating this step a locksmith can determine which pin stack has the most and least resistance.

When the pressure from the torque wrench is released the locksmith will then go to the pin stack that showed the most by way of resistance and then lift the bottom of the pin with random amounts of force.

As the top and bottom pins for a chamber meet at the sheer line apply enough pressure to keep the pins out of the lower chamber and in place. Smoothly move on to the next stack that showed resistance and continue lifting them into place until the plug of the lock can be turned.

The reason this technique is possibly is that the lower pin chambers of a pin tumbler cylinder are never perfectly aligned with the matching upper pins and also the pins, instead of forming a straight line actually form a shape more similar to a zigzag across the plug and cylinder.

As stated, this is not a method for the novice to try out just anywhere, as it can not only cause costly damage but can be considered a form of breaking and entering if being performed on locks other than your own. Also, one who is in possession of the tools required to perform these jobs when not a licensed locksmith can be thought of as a would be criminal.

Work Place Robbery Prevention

Work, for most people, is supposed to be the place you go to perform your duties and earn money that pays bills, allows for evenings out, vacations, savings and safety by way of financial security.

For the business owner, their establishment and the services they provide is an investment in the future, for prosperity and growth, and the employees they hire represent that concept with care and ability for the workplace and their job.

The employee is also an investment as they are the face of the business and represent all that the business is about. They are valued members of a team that must be protected and cared for as much as the very business itself.

There are times when unsavory types try to rob a business and no matter if they are successful or not it is best to have tools in place for proper prevention whether this occurs or not, as well as to maybe assist in convincing someone to not attempt a robbery at your establishment.

Of course the first step would be to consult a professional about installing proper, high security commercial locks in your business. Consider your needs and what needs to be protected. The front door may always be open but offices can be locked, safes can be closed and access to the backs of any establishment can be secured. Locksmiths are without a doubt the most authoritative experts on this and they can also install virtually every other security product needed.

Closed circuit television cameras, video monitoring, is great in aiding the prevention of robbery as most robbers do not want to be seen or caught on the video. This type of security is certain to at least make the thief think twice.

Having more than one person on a shift at a time helps, too, especially on night shifts. It is easier for someone to come into a business and manipulate one person, but with two there it always has to be considered that one of them can get away and alert the police.

Have a strong and durable safe on site in order to keep large amounts of cash out of the register. There are many types of safes that allow for a drop only and these are very helpful as the less cash in the register, the less attractive to a robber.

Always remind your employees to be aware of each customer and watch for any suspicious activity like those who hang around outside for long periods of time and anyone who seems to be surveying the place.

While most business owners hope their employees are as dedicated as they are sometimes trust can be abused. Never give out keys to important areas and always have locks changed in the event that a possible disgruntled former employee could seek revenge with a robbery.

Always keeping mostly unused, but accessible doors or entries locked and secure will help in prevention, too.

Apartment Security

Home security can imply many things. Alarm systems, locks, intercoms, security gates, peep holes, CCTV and the list can go on and on, but apartment living requires an even more watchful eye and diligent effort, when living in a community with so many coming and going, to ensure your safety and well being.

Ask most men and women in law enforcement and they will tell you it is not only the hardware or products you install in your residence that keeps a person safe, it is also the knowledge of what to look for and the willingness to take the time to learn about them.

For the new tenant to any building, installing new locks is always a good idea since those keys could have been copied any number of times, and property owners and managers do not regularly change the locks.

Be sure to take advantage of the window that is normally located next to the front door before letting opening the door or letting anyone in. If a peep hole is in place use it each and every time.

You can go to any home supply store and purchase a block or wedge of any material that can be used to jam under the door, thus making it so the door cannot be forced open.

Women making inquires are just as dangerous as men as they may be the front for others who are looking for apartments to rob or perform even worse acts.

In evening hours ask anyone claiming to be making package deliveries to leave the packages outside the door, do not open it unless you are expecting something.

Always keep the door residence locked when you are away (no matter the amount of time you will be gone) and when you are home.

It is best to only put your last name on your mailbox. Even if you have a roommate you don't want to give up too much information about yourself and this is a very good deterrent for women who live alone.

Consider the purchase of auto timers for lights to give the appearance that you are home when you might not be.

As with a car or truck, never leave valuables in places anyone can see from the outside.

This will only encourage possible break-ins.

Do not advertise that you are alone and if you have children discourage them from answering the door as they are less inclined to know who might or might not be a threat.

Always be aware of strangers in your apartment community. Of course with so many people living in one place you will never be able to know everyone and most certainly will not know their friends, but be mindful of those who loiter or show up at the same times by themselves. Alert the police if they repeat this often or they seem threatening.

When exiting your vehicle always have your front door automotive key ready and available.

Your safety and security is important and the best way to maintain this is to be mindful of events that could happen. By all means these things are not the norm, but to be aware of them is the first step to seeing them if they present themselves.

Off To College

Moms and Dads nationwide simultaneously revel in this day and dread it. This is the big day when their little boy or girl, no longer a child has graduated through all of the levels of public schooling, adolescence and teenage years to finally make their way on their own to college, leaving home for the collegiate experience.

University can be scary, but also incredibly exciting as most starting their freshman year only four years away from their first real career and paycheck, and also finally about to get a taste of coveted independence, adult treatment and the opportunity to be out on their own in the world. In those days we all thought we knew everything when we were that age, our children have followed in our footsteps and think the same, and this cycle will continue with each and every generation.

While the newly crowned adult set off on the adventure before them there are a few tips and hopefully well taken pieces of advice you, dutiful parents, might want to instill in them before the door closes behind them.

No one wants to imagine that when their child heads off to school, along with all the other fears and crazy thoughts of what might occur, that crime could play a factor in the university experience but it can and with these few simple, but heeded lessons you might just be able to make sure that this regrettable occurrence avoids them altogether.

Whether living in a dormitory or off campus apartment special attention by the new student should be given to their new home and the security devices that come with it. To be certain they are excited, scared (but they won't usually tell Mom and Dad that) and overwhelmed by their new surroundings. Crime Prevention Awareness

Protection, it is said, is an instinct. Humans have it, as do animals and insects. Protection is not only for self preservation, but to guard and keep safe our children, our families, loved ones and friends. We safeguard our homes and the spaces we feel secure in and we in turn require that security for the peace of mind if offers.

If a person were to constantly have to worry about various fears of what can or might occur with home intrusions it would do nothing less than drive them crazy. There are many ways to free your mind from these thoughts and let you go about your days with a clear and happy and worry free sense of well being.

In order to stave off any possible crime that may occur in the home it is best to first have the adequate tools available for your use and knowledge about some basic misconceptions.

First of all a double deadbolt is not necessary in the home unless there is access to one of the locks. In that case it does make sense however these are also dangerous in that they can cause extreme problems in case a quick exit is required if there is a fire or other emergency.

There are three main areas of concern of a home to be aware when thinking about crime prevention, and while they are obvious, most people do not take the time to find adequate solutions. Door chains are also quite inexpensive but they really only provide an idea of protection, as they are easily defeated with a small amount of force or even a rubber band and a tack.

For effective crime prevention and peace of mind, be sure to lock doors and windows when you are away form the home and when you are there but going to sleep.

How To Become A Locksmith

The Ease of the Break In

There are many things in the world that can happen to a person and their possessions and thankfully there are many measures a person can take to protect what is theirs with the appropriate consultation for one's security needs, but no matter how much protection you add to your home, business, vehicles or belongings in order to keep them safe, there is just no sure-fire way to be one hundred percent protected.

While that is not meant to discourage a person by any means it is meant to alert you to the fact that no matter what, crime exists and with the right products you can deter most criminals from attempting to break into what is rightfully yours.

Of course the better the lock and hardware on a door the more protection is added, or implied. Many locks on the market that are currently used for homes can be picked by someone skilled in the technique of lock picking. When purchasing a lock for your door always make sure to investigate them and what defenses they come with to combat lock picking.

Cars and trucks are not impervious to lock picking either, however with many of the new security systems currently installed on vehicles this can be avoided due to the fact that the original key is needed to make the engine and fuel pump work. No lock pick can do that so far.

Lock picking isn't the only way someone can gain entry into your business or home. Using methods such as brute force to knock down doors, crow bars and ply bars, wrenches or screwdrivers, and of course breaking a window can allow someone access into your private property.

Investing in higher quality, higher security doors are also a great tool for added safety and defense against transgression. Solid core and metal doors are available for sale in many places and security specialists, such a locksmith can recommend many brands.

To help guard against someone gaining admittance through a window be sure to pick up window locks and never leave the windows of your home open more than six inches if you are away from the house.

The scheme of breaking a window is also effective for automobiles, however, as mentioned many cars manufactured these days come equipped with a standard horn based alarm system able to alert the owner or bystanders of a possible break in. Older models and those unequipped are not always so lucky.

Types of Locks: Not By Name Alone

Again we revisit some of the answers listed in the previous article of what a lock is. Not the explanation, but the basic and normal responses of "the front door lock", "the automobile lock" "the bicycle lock" and innumerable responses relating to other "locks". These locks described above are in fact just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, as there is more than just one type of house lock, car lock, and bike lock and so on. Let's take a closer look at some of these locks and see what we might uncover.

To begin we will start with some of the more universal "house locks". In the home we will find the lever lock, which, while widely popular, is more or less a key in knob lock with levers as opposed to the most common of locks called appropriately titled, yes, you guessed it - key in knob lock.

Also for added protection the deadbolt lock, while being one of the most secure locks around (no pun intended), is also very common in the household for use on doors of all manner, as is the interlocking deadbolt which is in most cases found on the front door of homes.

Automotive locks are in the usual places such as door locks, glove compartment locks, the very important ignition lock, trunk locks and the constantly changing transponder lock which are quite expensive to reproduce, so be sure to keep a watch on these. Make, model and year of each vehicle is important when working with and identifying these locks so knowing this information is quite vital on your way to learning and perhaps working with these types of locks.

Working in multiple scenarios might not always sound like the typical function for locks, but never forget the padlock as a lock that can be used for storage facilities, moving truck doors, the previously mentioned lockers at school and while the typical and most popular lock for bicycles and motor scooters (not motorcycles due to their size) is the U shape design, the lock and chain method, which also utilizes the padlock, is also a tried and true measure and whether it is keyed or combination this truly is a multi-function and purpose low security lock.

Have you ever noticed someone pulling a trailer with their car or truck, taking the boat to the lake, pulling a motor home, trailers for work such as construction and landscaping? Most of them have an added feature called a trailer lock which protect from tow away theft when they might be left unattended.

As we delve more and more into locks and what they are and what their purpose is we can see even clearer that by name alone there is more than just one type of lock for one type of job. In fact this list can go on for quite some time to the amazement of not only the new or novice person interested in locks but even to those experienced and seasoned veterans of the locksmith and repair industries.

Types of Locks

To begin this piece which will become a number of articles about locks we must begin with ideas of what a lock is as well as the names of the various locks we intend to write about and explain. While it serves a very large purpose for the locksmith or general handyman to have a diverse and learned knowledge of locks and what they do there are also those out there who find this information to be useful for the purpose of general comprehension and understanding of subjects that interest or fascinate them. Whereas this article and the series on Types of Locks to follow are geared to the layperson it is perhaps also useful to those in the commercial locksmith and repair businesses.

For most, their knowledge of and about locks starts and stops at the very base, general level and usually revolves solely on what they have known or experienced from childhood to the present. The front door of their home, car locks, locks on drawers and cabinets and even the locks on the lockers they've used at school. To go further one might find a few people outside of the emergency locksmith industry with a familiarity of other places locks are present but I am sure we can draw the line at the ones already mentioned.

So to begin, why not ask a very simple question: what is a lock and what is a locks purpose?

We will start with the last half of the question, what is a locks purpose. Most would answer to keep things in, to protect belongings and keep homes or businesses secure. While not getting too technical or learned these answers are completely correct! As the series continues we will possibly find more purposes of a lock and its role.

We find that the definition of a lock in the dictionary is "a fastening, as for a door, operated by a key or a combination." While this definition is rather bland and dry, it is also a brief but correct explanation and view of what a lock is to others. To better understand what a lock is from the viewpoint of those without experience as a professional locksmith or repairperson the author performed an investigation of five friends and their answers are as follows:

Friend Number One: "A lock is something that keeps a door safely closed when needed."

Friend Number Two: "A lock prevents someone from opening something unless they have a key to open it."

Friend Number Three: "Well, a few things can be a lock. A fastener around two clips, when shoes are tied aren't they locked? People put things inside lockets and most of the time the idea of the word lock is used to represent the device that locks in order to securely keep valuables and homes safe." ****Authors note: friend number three likes to elaborate****

Friend Number Four: "A lock? It keeps out burglars! It's not always safe out there, people try and break in and hurt people or steal their things and locks are the way we deal with that."

And Friend Number Five: "Locks protect our cars, homes and any other important items we own."

What is evident is that two questions, when asked, elicit the same response for the average person. No matter who was correct or if the answers given were accurate, there is no right or wrong. A lock and its purpose(s), while described or thought of differently for numbers of people, represents one thing to all - protection.

Car Locks in the United States

Locksmiths work on vehicle locks new and old, specialized, out-of-date and technologically advanced. When in the field many of the numerous locks, ignition locks and their respective types of hardware seen are on automobiles of all makes and sizes which are usually within an age range of brand new to twenty years old.

For the automotive locksmith, car mechanic, auto-restoration specialist or hobbyist who finds themselves interested in or find they are working on locks, ignitions and parts from older modes of transportation it is a good idea to be well-versed in not only servicing or opening these vehicles, but a short history of the car lock in the U.S.

Starting our way back in 1935 and moving forward it was General Motors who with only one keyway consisting of four depths and six cuts began using side bar locks. Chrysler followed their lead by installing sidebar trunk locks in 1959, then in 1966 changed to pin-tumbler locks that were the same size as the previous locks.

In 1967 GM came out with two new blank keys and added a fifth depth to their codes. 1968 saw GM introduce two more blank keys to the market and another two blank keys in 1969, along with steering column mounted ignition locks. Ford, Chrysler and American Motors (known as AMC, purchased by Chrysler and now defunct) also began using mounted steering columns in 1970 while GM stopped putting codes on door locks and introduced two more new blank keys.

1972 saw Chrysler using GM's Saginaw tilt steering columns with sidebar ignition locks. Chrysler also started to use trunk locks retained by large nuts in 1973. GM, in 1974, began to key locks so the principal key fit the ignition lock only while the other locks used the secondary key. In 1977 Ford stopped putting codes on door locks altogether while GM stopped using codes on glove compartment boxes in 1978. General Motors also changed their ignition locks to screw retained instead of the previous spring tab retained while Ford started to install fixed pawls on door locks in 1979. GM followed the use of fixed pawls in 1980.

Also keying locks so the primary key fit the ignition only and the rest utilized the secondary key in 1981 was Ford, who also stopped putting codes on glove box locks. American Motors (see above for reference) began making the Alliance using the X92 door key and the X116 ignition key, both only being used previously on foreign cars.

In 1985 Ford started using wafer tumbler locks and sidebar ignition locks that worked with the Ford ten cut keys with primary keys working on ignition and doors and secondary keys working for the trunk and glove box.

1986 saw General Motors introduce the Vehicle Anti Theft Systems knows as VATS on the '86 Corvette.

Chrysler, in 1989 began to use their double sided wafer tumbler locks.

In 1992 GM followed the VAT system with the Mechanical Anti Theft System (MATS) for its full sized, rear wheel drive vehicles and in 1996 a radio frequency called the Passive Anti Theft System (PATS) was introduced on the Mercury Sable and the Ford Taurus.

With general research you can find not only find these locks, ignitions, keys and makes but a myriad of other, including foreign, to keep you in the know for any types you may come across.

The Vehicle Identification Number

Sometimes when you are driving and the glare of the sun hits the windshield just right a little placard, small, thin and long in a rectangular plate can be seen. Maybe you're washing your vehicle and you notice a series of numbers on the upper portion of the driver's side dashboard. Yes there are some who are well aware of what this is but for others they might seem just a bunch of useless numbers and letters.

For those not in the know, what you have found is your vehicle identification number, also known as a VIN number. All automobiles in the United States have these identification numbers and they are always located near the windshield of the drivers (left) side on a plate. The reason it is located there is to make it visible from the outside and in most cases even dashboard covers have a cut section to reveal the vehicles VIN number.

The VIN number is used to determine many things and is used as a means of, yep, you guessed it, identification for the car or truck. When acquiring auto insurance you will be asked to provide this number. This helps the auto insurance company determine numerous pieces of required information about the automobile you will be insuring.

The VIN number is also quite handy for a locksmith when determining and choosing which tools are necessary for the work at hand.

While there are some cases where the VIN number will be placed in a position other than the left hand side of the vehicle and many of the numbers and letters are random, the letters and numbers that are in positions one, two and ten (left to right reading) represent codes that identify the vehicles country of origin and the make and the model year of the car or truck.

For those curious to know what these numbers and letters mean, the list, while abbreviated, is as follows: Located in position one is the country of origin. Number one is for the U.S. Number two signifies Canada and number three is Mexico. Sometimes the letter J will be present and this represents Japan. Remember, it is not the make of the car and where the manufacturer is from it is where the car is built, hence the origins of the vehicle.

Position two is for the make of the vehicle. B means it is a Dodge, F is a Ford. It then reverts to numbers as follows, one is Chevrolet, two is Pontiac, three is for an Oldsmobile, four a Buick and five is the Cadillac.

Position ten using both numbers and letters, as well, represents the model year where T, V, W, X and Y signify the years 1996 thru 2000 respectively and the numbers one thru ten follow with the years 2001 thru 2009 with one being the lowest.

Next time you are out with friends and you want to have something to talk about that they might just not be aware of, see if you can't impress them with your knowledge of the vehicle identification number.

It has been reported in some states of groups of individuals trying to recruit, unwillingly, a locksmith into aiding them in the theft of vehicles. The way this works is a group a people will call a locksmith requesting service for a vehicle lock out. This is usually done in areas of high traffic and large numbers of cars and trucks so as to not seem out of the ordinary, like urban parts of cities with outdoor public parking garages and parking lots of various establishments.

After arriving at the scene the locksmith is told that the keys were misplaced, either left at a different location or lost after a night out on the town and asked to help them gain entry. The would be car thieves then ask the locksmith to make a key, any style befitting the vehicle and drive off in ease as if all is normal, when of course it is not.

In most cases an automotive locksmith will ask not only for identification and proof that the car is actually theirs, to comply with laws, but they should pay strict attention to the demeanor and attitude of those they are opening vehicles for. When those attempting to perpetrate a crime such as this become restless and lacking certain answers, struggling for response and seeming a little more nervous than the situation requires it is best to not tip them off to the fact that you are aware something might be wrong. Conveniently excuse yourself to go to your truck or work vehicle to retrieve additional tools and while there quietly and discreetly place a phone call to the police, giving them quick but accurate details and location.

While waiting for police to arrive the locksmith, pretending to work, should involve the fake car owners in small talk such as asking these would be car thieves random questions about the vehicle, knowing full and well that it is not their automobile, but keeping the assailants at the scene to be questioned and perhaps caught and prosecuted by local law enforcement. The information gathered in these vocal exchanges will help the police in accessing the situation and will make for important on the scene facts for the police report if arrests are made.

Of course a locksmith must always be aware and concerned for his or her safety in all situations and this is certainly one of those times, but always stay aware and be attentive for any less than normal and out of the ordinary circumstances such as this. Handcuffs. When using this word we don't always, as people, imagine the most happy of scenarios as they usually bring on ideas and thoughts of criminals, arrest, the police and illicit behavior, used for the restraint of those who in most cases just might be up to no good. One would consider most moments involving handcuffs in their personal lives as quite an uncertain, fearful or perhaps one of those in the "wrong place, at the wrong time" circumstances; however let's take into consideration other instances where they might actually need to be removed.

Used in larger cities across the United States, Europe, Asia and many other countries and continents, motor bikes, from motorcycles to scooters, are becoming quite popular as a mode of transportation these days due to their wallet-saving small tanks and high gas mileage. We've all seen them zipping past cars and trucks on busy city streets, negotiating between vehicles in bumper to bumper traffic that wrecks havoc on the gas tank and speeding up and down highways and freeways all over the world. Yes, they are convenient by mere size alone and the previously mentioned ability to save money when fuel costs are so outrageous but they are also, for the more brazen, frequented by spills, accidents, hits and theft.

In a recent accident involving a scooter, the driver was making a left hand turn with an arrow when it was struck by a vehicle in the forward lane. The resulting impact was fortunately not enough to hurt the rider, but in the fall the key snapped, broken, and half of it lay stuck inside of the ignition. These types of incidents are normal with motor scooters and all riders should be sure to familiarize themselves with the services of a locksmith so as to not create further damage to the ignition by attempting to remove or repair the broken key on their own, thereby requiring possible ignition replacement and greater cost incurred.

History of the Lock: England

Welcome back to the History of the Lock series. As we have seen in previous articles there is quite a rich and colorful history presented in the lock, the locksmith and each of their respective developments. Over time locks have progressed a great deal from much needed, but basic, forms of protection to those advanced, secure and ever evolving ones that we see and utilize all around us today. From the early pin tumbler to the keyless entry lock, the elaborate knot to the deadbolt, warded locks and their current models to VAT systems, we see a constant and interesting evolution of one of the most important inventions known to man, the lock.

We begin this part of the series with England. Being one of the more industrialized nations of Europe locks were in high demand with little in the way of progress being made in lock protection. A trio of clever minds in lock design in England were Joseph Bramah, Robert Barron and Jeremiah Chubb.

Joseph Bramah wrote the thesis "A Dissertation on the Construction of Locks" and exposed a great many of the flaws found in locks of his current day, so called "thief proof" locks. This thesis made clear the ease which these locks could be picked by a criminal with any knowledge or training in keys and locks or a specialist with adequate skills. Bramah found one tumbler lock to be in good form but noticed a glaring fault: when this lock was in the locked position the levers gave away the flaw to its design which were its uneven edges at the bottom. Therefore a key coated with material such as wax could inserted into the lock and a new key created from this. Showing the bottom edges of the levers displayed the depths needed to make the new key. Bramah surmised the lever bottoms should be cut unevenly, thus creating and patenting in 1798 a barrel shaped lock which used multiple sliders that were aligned with corresponding notching at the barrel of its key.

It was Robert Barron's lock that Joseph Bramah pointed out was a good, but flawed lock. Barron's lock, which added a tumbler to the current locks of the day was more secure than the others (and remains the basic design for lever tumbler locks today) and also used wards. However, he also added a series of level tumblers which were acted upon by a single step of the key, stopping the bolt movement if the tumbler was not raised to the correct height of the key. While this improved upon the previous tumbler locks of the time he added six double lever actions to his lock thinking it would make it almost impossible to open with the proper key. While ingenious in design at the time, as we see, he was wrong.

Another lock that had multiple enhancements over Barron's lock was Jeremiah Chubb's four level tumbler rim lock, called a detector lock. Built with a detector level to alert if the lock had been tampered with it also came with a metal drape which fell over the keyhole as the lock began turning. Chubb's lock received praise throughout the locksmith industry and has been considered one of the greats in the history of locks.

History of the Lock: Europe

Part Two in the History of the Lock series deals with Europe and the middles ages. When speaking of locks and their importance we, as people, tend to equate this with our modern ideas and thoughts of why and how we use these items. But those days we call history were the present to the ones who lived in them and their businesses, stock, belongings and homes were just as important then to them as they are now to all of us.

As we take a look back in the past we see that warded locks, a type of lock which uses a set of wards, or obstructions to stop the lock from opening unless the right key is used, were still being made by metal workers in such locations as Germany, France and England. Variations on keys were made which could move about a post and move the location of a movable bar, which was the locking bolt. As time progressed (the renaissance and medieval times) craftsmen, perhaps the earliest of locksmiths, improved the design of the warded lock by implementing numerous interlocking wards and the use of more complicated keys and key shapes. While the beginning stages to illicit use of locks were internal wards, many of the wards could be easily sidestepped.

As locksmithing became more sophisticated, locks were designed with many levers where each had to be lifted and aligned correctly prior to the bolt moving to the unlocked position. An exposition entitled The Art of the Locksmith was published in France in 1767 which has examples of the lever tumbler lock. No one knows who the inventor of the lock is.

Guilds, almost like current associations were created and when attempting to attain master locksmith status, journeymen locksmiths had to create and provide a working lock and key in order to get this title. The lock and key were meant for display as opposed to installation. In the fourteenth century these guilds became quite large and overtook most of the new locksmith industry with the regulating of design, prices and technique. Eventually becoming corrupt and not encouraging the development of new and better technological advancements very little in the way of significant hardware advancement occurred during the times of these guilds.

As we will see in further editions of the History of the Lock series, locksmithing took on major and important roles in security and protection to compliment the already high in demand need for trade and commerce to also meet the need and desire of safeguarding for the home and each persons personal belongings.

As the role of the lock and the locksmith grows we start to see how the need becomes larger as industry becomes wider and populations increase. This is a trend for most forms of security in large societies, and the lock and locksmith are no exception to this rule.

While much has been learned from the earliest days of the lock and the progression into the middle ages, there is still much more as the industrialized nations grew.

History of the Lock: America

With a rich history and industrial boom not seen before in the last few hundred years, America, a young country in comparison to European countries, has had its fair share of history, invention and of course, locks.

Anyone familiar with the history of America is sure to know the influence of the English in its early days. The British kept quite a "tight ship" of its skilled craftsmen and their works thus keeping their patents and laborers from prospering elsewhere. American locks had a poor showing for many years and struggled in sales and craftsmanship until and American physician by the name of Abraham O. Stansbury was granted an English patent in 1805 for his pin tumbler lock which was based on the principles of Bramah's and the Egyptian locks.

This design was granted the first lock patent two years later by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. While this particular lock was never manufactured for sale it featured a double acting pin tumbler and segmented pins that automatically recoiled when any of the tumblers were pushed too far.

Improved upon locks like the one invented by Soloman Andrews had adjustable tumblers and keys and allowed for rekeying at any time. Since the feature of rekeying relied on more skilled but hard to find locksmiths they were used more for businesses such as banks and not for the home. Partnered with another lock inventor by the name of Newell, Soloman Andrews received patents on the removable tumbler lock that could be disassembled and scrambled in the 1850's. This lock was built with a double set of internal levers and had interchangeable bits which matched the varied arrangements of the tumblers making it painstakingly difficult at that time. Alfred C. Hobbs, a legend in the locksmith world for picking Jeremiah Chubb's famous lock, came along in the 1850's as well and patented what he termed "Protector" locks. While they certainly had their protective qualities, they were shown to be flawed and defeated early on.

American locks have shown much by way of improvement over the years from 1805 to 1865 with Linus Yale's "Quadruplex" bank lock in 1844 that featured designs based on Stansbury and Bramah, as well as the ancient Egyptian design. His son, Linus Yale Jr. improved on his fathers design so much that he is credited as the inventor of the modern pin tumbler lock. Yale Jr. also invented the Cylinder Lock in 1865, considered as the most important lock design and development creating a new standard in the industry. While providing higher levels of security this lock not only could not be rekeyed but could be used on varieties of doors and sizes, be mass produced and showed that keys no longer needed to pass through the width of a door to make its way to the bolt mechanism or tumblers, allowing for smaller, thinner keys.

There has not been a lot in the basic design of locks that has occurred since the mid to late 1800's in the United States, however some notable locks are the interlocking deadbolt (aka jimmy-proof rim lock) in 1916, an interchangeable core developed in 1920, the Blake Brothers door latch that was designed with two connecting doorknobs, setting the standard for lock design today. The Walter Schlage cylindrical lock in 1928 which also incorporated a locking mechanism between two knobs, Chicago Lock Companies "Chicago Ace Lock", a tubular key lock and the high security mechanical locks invented by Medeco in 1967.

As time has progressed, so have locks and we see that a history of security has provided so much for the present day locks and their inspiration.

Deadbolt Locks and Home Security

I believe the key to a home's front door security lies within the deadbolt lock. Many standard doorknob locks are of a low security grade. Ironically, these low security grade doorknob locks are the very same locks that are installed in homes across the country. Over time a deadbolt lock may experience ware and tear, thus needing to be replaced. With all of the different brands and choices out there you may find it difficult picking out a deadbolt lock that suits both your security needs and budget. The following information will touch base on different types of deadbolt locks, as well as listing the major pros and cons of each, helping you to make an educated decision on which deadbolt lock is right for you.

First up is the single cylinder deadbolt. Single cylinder deadbolts have a key cylinder only on one side of the lock. On the opposite side there is a knob. An advantage of single cylinder deadbolts is the fact that you can open them from the inside without a key. A possible disadvantage of having a single cylinder deadbolt installed, would be if there is any window or glass installed around and or close enough to your door that if broken, would allow a burglar to reach through the broken glass and unlock the deadbolt.

Next up is the double cylinder deadbolt. Double cylinder deadbolts have keyed cylinders on both sides of the lock. Double cylinder deadbolts do NOT have a knob! You MUST have a key to open it. The fact that you have to have a key to open either side make double cylinder deadbolts more secure than single cylinder deadbolts. Any home that has children whom are prone to wandering off might want to consider having a double cylinder deadbolt installed because you would be free of worrying if your "Adventurous youth" snuck out of the house. However double cylinder deadbolts could cause major problems in emergency situation because a person who doesn't have the key would be able to exit safely.

The final deadbolt to review is the keyless entry deadbolt. There are a number of different types of keyless entry deadbolts that are on the market today. There are keyless entry deadbolts that can be operated via remote control, alphanumeric keypad, and even fingerprint readers. Many consumers find that the sole, yet unfortunate drawback of keyless entry deadbolts is the hefty price tag that comes along with them.

Choosing Quality Locks

Customers that call me needing to change locks often have many questions and concerns regarding the various types of locks and the purposes they serve. Here's a little insider information from the pros answering questions ranging from the type of lock you should consider to the length of time it takes to change a lock.

Are you aware that the average break-in takes less than 30 seconds? Obviously most people wouldn't leave all of their money, and or valuable belongings lying in plain sight for potential prowlers to see! Yet even so, the most stolen item from homes and cars just happens to be women's purses. That's the same as leaving cash on the table - only now the burglar has access to your credit cards, keys, ID, cash, and any personal items that you may have left in your pocket book.

I once viewed a surveillance video, which caught two men breaking in through the glass door. You can guess how they got in. So the question is: What good did the locks do? The business owner I consulted at the time asked me that same question and my reply was simply, "Time". It's very difficult to keep a burglar out of a secure area even with security guards and sniff dogs. If you can keep the burglar out long enough for him to decide it's not worth it then you've done your job. I pointed out to the business owner that there was no sign on the door saying there is a CCTV system on his property, which could have been a deterrent. Good locks may not always keep burglars out but extra precautions may help to change their mind! Good enough I say. You may not be able to stop a good burglar but if you can slow them down enough they may consider going elsewhere.

What you should look for in a good lock

You have two concerns: keep burglars out and prevent internal fraud. So what kind of lock should you choose? The consumer has the ability do their own research to help in making a good decision about the security of their home. One example is The Locksmith Journal. This a publication that reviews lock manufacturers products and awards them a consumer rating. It's important to note that the locks that you can purchase in Home Depot or other hardware stores that sells mass produced locks are not even reviewed. Also any decent locksmith will be able to tell you about the quality of locks that are currently on the market.

When doing your research you'll find that once you find a good manufacturer you'll still need to research the grades of locks that they supply. One of the more respected lock manufacturers is Schlage. Their products include a lot of high-security lock and key waves but they also have a line of locks they make which are only to be sold at large retailers. This product is made in Mexico and is an exact replica of the SC-1 grade 3 residential locks but lacks the amount of security you get out of the original SC-1.

Schlage offers many levels of security I am a fan of the Primus line. They have a unique key wave called SC-4 and it has a security feature on the key making it more difficult to pick. Though it is not a high security lock the price is cost-effective. Schlage also has a line of locks that come with the Mul-T-Lock key wave, which can be great to use at your home as well as at your business! Hard to drill, hard to pick, good for exterior doors and available at a fair price.

Kwikset, another high-profile lock manufacturer, does something similar. They sell the same product locksmiths carry but with a significant difference: the material of the lock is of a lower quality. You get the same lock at a cheaper price but the quality of the product, durability and life are vastly different. For a good burglar time is no longer an issue.

Time is the name of the game! You may not be able to keep burglars out altogether but you can make their life more difficult. Locks like Medico or ASSA are hard to pick and can take hours to drill even for the pros. Medico is perhaps the most respected locksmith manufacturer in the entire locksmith community. ASSA and Mul-T-Lock are from the same Medico lock family and they are all made from the same durable materials.

Another consideration is keyless entry locks. Today these products are much cheaper than what they used to be. For example there is a dead-bolt that has a combination lock (like a safe, with a dial). There is no battery needed, no keys can get lost or stolen and the best part about it is that you can change the code yourself as many times as you like! This is a great product that will keep you from spending money on you locks and keep you safe.

There are lock systems that work on the same keyless access but run on batteries. I don't like this option as much and I definitely think that if you decide to purchase one you will need to choose a product that is commercial grade. The DL series is one of the better locks and made by Alarm Lock. These are not like the battery keyless access that customers ask me about made by Kwikset. The DL series is a commercial lock with a long lasting battery and can hold more then one code can even track the people coming in and out.

You might also consider biotechnology as a route to go. This includes fingerprints, retinal scanners and others. Your home probably came with a simple lock that would only take a few seconds to pick and drill.

The truth is that to a professional burglar you might as well leave your door open when you go to sleep at night. The reality is that there is a 30% increase in break-ins every year. Changing four locks to increase security only takes about 45 minutes. For a few dollars and about an hour you can do that much more to prevent yourself from becoming a burglary victim.

Ford Focus Ignition Problems

The Ford Focus has a known problem regarding the ignition. It could be six months, or it could even be six years, but eventually the ignition will stick! The key itself might get stuck in the ignition, or you may have to jiggle the ignition in order to have it turn - a sure sign that you should have a professional replace the ignition. Either way, if you own a Ford Focus, there is a high probability that you may come across this issue. Many consumers feel that the general cause of this ignition switch problem is due to poorly manufactured parts by Ford. The manner in which the Ford Focus ignition communicates with the car's computer is via the Transponder microchip, which is located directly within your car key, so replacing the ignition switch can be a highly complex operation, and is exactly why professional installation is strongly recommended. The problem comes from the ignition switch not being of the highest quality and is therefore easily worn out.
